Map of Reincarnation
Description:
Adriana Bustos (1965, Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she lives and works) reconfigures the cosmogonies and different representations of planet Earth construed in the past, deliberately jumbling the iconographic heritages of various cultural environments and geographies. Her painting Map of Reincarnation gives new interpretation to a drawing by Athanasius Kircher (the Museum of Civilizations possesses assorted objects from his renowned wunderkammer of the 17th century), depicting the cycles of human life and the stories of our explorations as a system interdependent with the Earth and its geological movements in which cultures and natures converge into a single entity. Her works outline impossible space-time journeys that reorganize the knowledge with which we have built the common sense of history, thus bringing out an imaginary that allows the recontextualization of the elements that make up the shared narratives. Here Bustos imagines the interconnectedness between the various lives that inhabit the planet, human and otherwise, as a possible map for reincarnation, understood as a perpetual vital metamorphosis.
